Care Instructions
How To Water Your Orchid And How Long To Soak It?
Watering is crucial for providing nutrients to your orchid, determining its overall health. However, it's not a one-size-fits-all scenario; the amount of water needed depends on the size of the flower. Follow this watering technique to determine the right amount:
- Place the orchid pot in a larger container (tray or larger decorative pot) filled with room temperature settled water. Pour water directly into the pot from a watering can. The liquid should fill the container to about 1/3. This is sufficient for the soil to absorb the necessary moisture. Overflowing can lead to soggy roots. Soak the orchid in water for 15-20 minutes. Monitor the young roots; when adequately hydrated, they will turn bright green.
- Consider using transparent pots for orchids to observe root health. Remove the pot from the water, allowing excess water to drain, which may take about an hour. During winter, if there's a slight draft from windows, let the orchids dry overnight to prevent freezing of damp roots.
- Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Orchids love humidity, but in their natural habitat, they absorb the right amount. Excess water drains to the lower layers of the soil.
- Orchids thrive in 50-80% humidity. Spray them, directing the mist to the underside of leaves. Take care not to wet the flowers or where leaves join the stem. Some gardeners recommend covering flowers with a damp cloth.
- Orchids enjoy fresh air, like on a balcony or terrace, but beware of drafts. Incorrect watering can lead to yellowing leaves, indicating either excessive moisture or dryness.
- For yellowing young leaves, consider repotting by trimming rotting roots. Adjust watering volume or duration for dryness or excess. Yellowing near the roots signals natural renewal; wait for the leaf to dry completely before cutting.
How Long Can Your Orchid Survive Without Water and How Frequently Should You Water It?
There are no universal rules for how often to water orchids. It depends on growing conditions. Observe your orchid closely to understand its needs. Well-hydrated roots are bright green. A sufficiently watered plant exhibits moist substrate and condensation on container walls.
- Water when a significant portion of the roots turns silvery-gray, and condensation is minimal. Waiting for complete drying during flowering may halt blooming.
- If your orchid isn't blooming, water when substrate, roots, and condensation are entirely dry. Test by lifting the pot; it should feel lighter than after watering.
- A little attention to your tropical plant will help you gauge its watering needs. Remember, orchids tolerate drought better than excess moisture. Too much water can be detrimental.
